Lost dreams

Kho jayenge ek din

Is bheed mein kahin,

Mil jayenge samandar mein

Ik chhote se boond ki tarah,

Phir na rahega

Koi bhi aakaar;

Kisi ke liye shayad

Ye nayi baat na hogi,

Shayad koi gaur bhi na kare,

Sab kuch shayad waise hi hoga

Us din ke baad,

Jaise pehle tha,

Par woh din

Kisike sapnon pe laga hua

Poorna viram hoga,

Us din shayad

Kisi ke andar

Kuch tootega,

Us din shayad

Kisike haunsle ki maut hogi,

Ik cheekh shayad

Utthegi bhi dil se,

Par hothon tak na aayegi….

An attempt at translation:

Lost will I be

One day

In this never-ending crowd,

I will merge into the vast sea

Like a droplet,

Losing my form;

It might not be

A novel thing for some,

No one might even notice,

Everything might go on

After that day

As it always was,

But that day

Might be the end

Of someone’s dreams,

Something inside someone

Might break

On that day,

Someone’s courage

Might die on that day,

Maybe even a scream would originate

From the heart,

Never to reach the lips,

Never to be heard….

  1. Sad. But very true. And thanks for the translation.

  2. Kisike haunsle ki maut hogi,

hmm.. something one should really fear about..

  3. Good Poem.

But does it matter to somebody whatever happens in/to this world after his/her demise?

It reminds me of the following lines from Ramdhari Singh Dinkar:

Uddeshya janm ka nahin keerti ya dhan hai,
sukh nahin dharm bhi nahin na hi chintan hai
Vigyan gyan bhi nahin na to darshan hai
Jivan ka antim dhyey swayam jivan hai.

    @hari, rambler and sushil

    thanks for the comments! 🙂

sushil – what i actually wanted to convey was not death and what happens after the death of a person. what i was ranting about was the death of the dreams of a person while still alive. a person’s hopes getting crushed somewhere down the line. a fate worse than death. 😦

    sorry for the pessimism, folks.

  5. The same lines in hindi script:

    उद्देश्य जन्म का नहीं कीर्ति या धन है
    सुख नहीं धर्म भी नहीं ना ही चिन्तन है
    विग्यान ग्यान भी नहीं ना तो दर्शन है
    जीवन का अन्तिम ध्येय स्वयं जीवन है॥

thanks! 🙂 nice lines, but couldn’t get the third one.

  7. Actually Vigyan is spelled wrongly because of the limitation of windows. 🙂
    Vigyan: Science
    Darshan: Philosophy
    Gyan: Knowledge

    So the meaning is:
The aim of life is not glory, wealth, prosparity, dharma, thoughts, science, philosophy etc.
The true aim of life is life itself.
The other things are achieved as a by-product.
