The triumph

A lazy Sunday afternoon,

A blissful game of Scrabble,

He and she play away,

Lost;

A little bit of cheating,

Feigned ignorance,

His carefully mis-spelt words,

And her points exceed his;

Her lips break out

Into a childish smile,

The sun comes out

From o’er the clouds;

She looks at him with raised eyebrows,

‘I won the game,’

She says, ‘Yay’,

Unbridled enthusiasm spilling out;

‘Yes’,

He says, almost to himself,

‘You won the game,

And I did triumph too!’;

‘What?’, asks she,

‘What are you mumbling?’

‘Nothing,’ he says,

‘Just that I love you.’

PS: This is what came to mind on thinking of this week’s prompt over at Writer’s Island – ‘Triumph’. 🙂

    Feels like quoting these words from the book, The Bridge Across Forever,

    “That’s what learning is, after all:not whether we lose the game, but how we lose and how we’ve changed because of it and what we take away from it that we never had before, to apply to other games. Losing, in a curious way, is winning”.

    Here too, the lady and the hero of our book are treading their first few steps on the path of love, through a game of chess…

  6. It was! For a mere word ‘triumph’, the idea was indeed creative.
