‘Our’ song

Random blog hopping led me to a wonderful blog, and I happened to chance upon a mushy, cutie pie post. It led me to think about my pre-wedding days and ‘our’ song. And I HAD to do my own version. πŸ™‚

***********************************

I must say I love the better half’s music sense. It is somewhat similar to mine – we both like songs with simple lyrics and with a wealth of meaning in them. Sometimes, we like songs that other people consider plain boring or tacky. I am still amazed at the way we compare notes on songs and find that we have both been liking the same songs throughout the years.

***********************************

Coming back to the point of the post, what is ‘our’ song? What is the song that we both love and have special memories attached to? This is it:

This was the very first song that the better half sent me, the first of the huge list of songs that we share on a regular basis. I still remember the day about a year ago, soon after we decided to become life partners, when he sent me the song online and said – ‘For you’. I hadn’t heard it before, and fell in love with it the instant I heard it. At one point of time, it had become an anthem for me, and I couldn’t get by a single day withoutΒ listening to the song at least once.Β  πŸ™‚ I still hear it off and on, and it still gives me the same beautiful feeling. πŸ™‚

***********************************

For Tamil-challenged readers, here’s a rough attempt at translating this gem of a song, to the best of my Tamil knowledge. πŸ™‚

Female – En veettu thottathil poovellam kaettuppaar
en veettu jannal kambi ellaamae kaettuppaar
en veettu thennangeetrai ippoadhae kaettuppaar
en nenjai chollumae

Ask all the flowers in my garden,

Ask each and every bar in my windows,

Ask the coconut grove at my home now,

They will tell you the state of my mind…

Female –En veettu thottathil poovellam kaettuppaar
en veettu jannal kambi ellaamae kaettuppaar
en veettu thennangeetrai ippoadhae kaettuppaar
en nenjai chollumae

Male – Vaaypaattu paadum pennae mounangal koodaadhu
vaaypoottu chattam ellaam pennukku aagaadhu

A girl who can sing so beautifully should not remain silent,

A girl should never lock her lips

Female – Vandellaam saththam poattaal poonjoalai thaangaadhu
mottukkal saththam poattaal vandukkae kaetkaadhu

If all the bees in the garden hum, the garden would not be able to withstand it,

If the flower buds sing, the bees can’t hear them

Male – Aadikku pinnaalae kaavaeri thaangaadhu

The river Cauvery cannot hold back its waters after aadi (season)

Female – Aalaana pinnaalae allippoo moodaadhu

The alli flower does not close after it has bloomed

Male – Aasai thudikkinradho?

Is desire dancing within you?

Male – Un veettu thottathil poovellam kaettuppaar
un veettu jannal kambi ellaamae kaettuppaar
un veettu thennangeetrai ippoadhae kaettuppaar
yen paer sollume

Ask all the flowers in your garden,

Ask each and every bar in your windows,

Ask the coconut grove at your home now,

They will recite my name..

Female – Sollukkum theriyaamal sollaththaan vandhaenae
sollukkul arththam poalae sollaamal ninraenae

I came to tell you about my love secretly, so secretly that even my words wouldn’t know,

I stand here silently, like meaning hidden inside words

Male – Sollukkum arththathukkum dhoorangal kidaiyaadhu
sollaadha kaadhal ellaam sorggaththil saeraadhu

There shouldn’t be a distance between words and their meanings,

Silent love does not get requited in heaven

Female – Ennikkai theerndhaalum muththangal theeraadhu
Whenever two lovers meet, their kisses don’t end

Male – Ennikkai paarththaalae muththangal aagaadhu
Even if two lovers meet after a long time, there is no dearth of kisses

Female – Mmm…anubhavamo?

Hmmm… you talk as if you are experienced?

Β ***********************************

My question to the better half a couple of days ago – What is our song? – brought forth a series of grunts and some hemming and hawing. And then, ‘It’s got to be En Veetu Thottathil’. πŸ™‚

My translation might suck, but the song is wonderful, innit? All the more special for us.

What’s ‘your song’ as a couple, folks? I would love to know. πŸ™‚

  11. Enna ma? Engala maadhiri ondi kattaingalukkellam love songs irukkapdaadha? πŸ˜€
Jokes aside, I thought “Ennai Konjam Maatri” was very nice. That the song was backed by an intensely chemical couple and good build-up up to then helped.
In recent times, I loved Kabhi Kabhi Aditi – very easy-going, smooth, at the same time, caring, affectionate and loving. Not exactly a couple-song, but cute nevertheless.
Oh and btw, first time to your blog, surprised at feeling like commenting first time itself. πŸ˜€

Babe you’ve come a loong looong way as far as the translation goes.. Not bad at all I say.. A few blips here and there but over all.. very commendable I say!

  15. priyaiyer

    @praveen

thanks a lot for the link.. shall check out soon πŸ™‚

gosh, i have to check out a lot of stuff that you people have shared with me 😦

    @aparna

hey, aps! long time, yeah.. yes, all fine πŸ™‚ how have you been?
mr. iyer does have good taste in music… and otherwise too, he has good taste.. he chose ME πŸ˜›

he he.. i wouldn’t say i have improved in terms of translation.. this translation ought to be good bcos, once upon a time, i actually did LOADS of research on it and bugged everyone i knew with it.. πŸ˜€ and the blips might be bcos i didn’t translate it literally.. i kinda did my own version.. putting in whatever fit as per me πŸ™‚

  16. I don’t really go in to the words of any song, quite strange – but some songs like ‘Nirpadhuve Nadappadhuve Ovvoru Pookkalume, Sattham illadha thanimai kettein etc, I have spent a long time analysing the lyrics. Generally though, I get bowled over by the music or even the lack of it – extremely melodious songs like ‘Ninaithu Ninaithu parthen’ from the some rainbow colony movie are just too good with their deep music and melody.

    @DI

oh i see.. i seem to delve really deep into the meanings of songs… though i do like some songs just for their melody, though the lyrics are not really that great..

i love ovvoru pookkalume and sattham illadha too… got a wealth of meaning…

  18. Kiran Manral

Vijay Arora and Zeenie Baby in Chura Liya Hai, with Zeenie Baby strumming the guitar. Thats our song. Though right now, our current song could be I will survive.

  19. priyaiyer

    @kiran
